John Riddell

John Alexander Riddell (f. 1995) er trommeslager, komponist, arrangør og dirigent, og er en af det mest efterspurgte unge trommeslagere i Danmark. Riddell har, trods sin unge alder, allerede sat sit spor på den danske jazzscene med mange forskellige solister og orkestre. Han er trommeslager i Aarhus Jazz Orchestra, et professionelt statsstøttet big band, som spiller mere end 80 koncerter om året - et orkester han også lejlighedsvis dirigerer og arrangerer for. Riddell har i sit arbejde med forskellige bigbands og orkestre spillet med et hav af danske og internationale solister: Randy Brecker, Oh Land, Andrea Motis, Seamus Blake, Adam Rapa, Teitur, Caro Emerald, Kira Skov, Maria Lucia, ANOHNI, Pede B, Wycliffe Gordon, Caroline Henderson, Sinne Eeg, Cæcilie Norby og mange flere.

I februar 2020 dirigerede John Riddell Aarhus Jazz Orchestra til projektet "High Score - Lyden af computerspillenes historie" med computerspilsmusik for bigband. Foruden at dirigere orkestret ved to udsolgte koncerter i samarbejde med Århundredets Festival, arrangerede Riddell størstedelen af musikken og sammensatte koncertprogrammet med dertilhørende visuals og beretninger fra computerspilforsker Andreas Lieberoth. 

Riddell har studeret på Det Jyske Musikkonservatorium, hvor han har specialiseret sig i bigband-musik og har opnået et karakteristisk og præcist trommespil. Derudover har han studeret i New York hos mestrene John Riley, Adam Nussbaum og Dennis Mackrel, samt modtaget undervisning i bigband-arrangement af Jens Christian ”Chappe” Jensen og Nikolai Bøgelund. 

Han leder og dirigerer Danish Youth Jazz Orchestra, som er en talentudviklingsbase for unge jazzmusikere i Region Midtjylland, og er samtidig aktiv som arrangør og kapelmester for diverse projekter.

John Alexander Riddell (born 1995) is a drummer, composer, arranger and conductor, based in Aarhus, Denmark, and is one of the most sought after younger drummers in Denmark. He is a member of Aarhus Jazz Orchestra, a professional, state-funded big band performing more than 80 concerts per year, which he also occasionally conducts and arranges for. Through his extensive work with various big bands, orchestras and combos, he has played and/or recorded with numerous Danish and international soloists, such as: Randy Brecker, Andrea Motis, Seamus Blake, Adam Rapa, Teitur, Caro Emerald, Kira Skov, Maria Lucia, ANOHNI, Pede B, Wycliffe Gordon, Caroline Henderson, Sinne Eeg, Cæcilie Norby and many moore.

Riddell has studied at the Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus and in New York City under the guidance of John Riley, Adam Nussbaum and Dennis Mackrel. In 2017, he founded the Danish Youth Jazz Orchestra which he now manages and conducts. The Danish Youth Jazz Orchestra is a talent development base for young jazz musicians in Denmark, funded by Aarhus Jazz Orchestra, the Aarhus City Council and Region Midtjylland.
